  • 1.  Upgrade to vSphere5 and certificates

    Hi,

I am going to be carrying out an upgrade to vSphere 5 in our ESX 3.5 / VC2.5 environment.

One of the prerequisites of the vCenter upgrade is to make sure SSL certificate checking is enabled. I have enabled this on our current environment in preparation.

Now when we try to access any of the VMs console, I get the error 'The remote host certificate has these problems'

Have switched the option back off and can access OK but wondering what effect this will have on my ability to upgrade?

Can I upgrade without this option switched on?

Do I need to carry out any prerequisite work on certs?

    Many thanks

    Steve

Just to poke my nose in here, have you looked at a possible parallel build and migrate instead of an in place upgrade?

Also, I just noticed you said ESX 3.5.  You wouldn't be able to upgrade from ESX 3.5 to ESXi 5.  You would need to build and migrate.

    Hi there.

Yep I am aware of that. I am going to migrate my VC2.5 U6 database and VC settings to a new box running Server 2008 R2 x64 and vCenter 5.

Then I am adding a new host. Which will have v5 fresh installed

Then I am going to individually fresh install each of my current hosts etc, once I have my VMs running on the new host.

But as I say, the VC upgrade guide states a prerequisite is that the check certificates option is enabled.

    Cheers

By default this option is enabled on vCenter 5.

Also, once you enable this on your VirtualCenter 2.5u6 server you will typically need to reconnect the hosts to your VirtualCenter server if I am not mistaken.

The Upgrade Notes say that the hosts will be disconnected, it doesn't mention should be done manually.

Should i disconnect manually and add them back in, do you think?

    Cheers

I would attempt to disconnect one and add it back in.
