    Hello everyone,

I am relatively new to VMWare and still working on getting up to speed on a number of items.  I am currently attempting to remediate our three ESX hosts.  Earlier today I moved all of the guest systems off of host 1, attached the Critical Patches baseline and ran a scan, which showed a total of 45 patches needed.  When I viewed the list of patches needed, five of them show a listing of Conflict in the Compliance column.  My questions are these.  Should I deselect these patches that show as conflicts when staging the patches and remediating the server, and then run the scan again to see if they are then needed?  If not and I leave them selected, will the staging and remediation process install the patches in the correct order, etc. in order to avoid any conflicts and problems with the installation?  All help is very much appreciated!

Hi rdillion, there are two types of conflicts - with any patches on your hosts or with any patches in your repository. As I can see you have conflicts with patches in the repository. This conflict does not indicate any problem on the host. It just means that the current baseline is in conflict and you can take an action to resolve the conflicts usually.

If a patch is in conflict with other patches that are installed on the host, the conflicting patch might not be
installed or staged. However, if another patch in the baseline resolves the conflicts, the conflicting patch
is installed. For example, consider a baseline that contains patch A and patch C, and patch A conflicts with
patch B, which is already installed on the host. If patch C obsoletes patch B, and patch C is not in conflict
with patch A, the remediation process installs patches A and C.

    I hope this helps,

    Hi Petko,

Yes, that information does help, and thanks very much for providing that.  I also was able to determine that in this specific case, the patches that were in conflict were actually ones for the Cisco Nexus V1000 switch appliance, which I do not have in my environment.  I was able to proceed and successfully remediate my host systems.  Thanks again for your help.
