I see that VSphere version 5 update 1 was released last week...will the free Hypervisor version also be receiving this update?

The download page still refers to version 5 that was released last August.

    Thanks...

I guess the free version will also be updated in the near future. Anyway, if you want, you can download the upgrade package from http://www.vmware.com/patchmgr/download.portal and patch existing hosts to the Update 1 build.

I was wondering the same thing but a lot of things on the website and support are either very vague or out dated a bit it seems. I seen Update 1 was out and it can be downloaded but not from the hypervisor download page which only shows 5.0.0.

Been on the site for hours, and confused on how Update 1 can be out but doesn't show on the download page. Starting to think I am very confused and my brain is slowly melting out my ears.... Is this just me?

If you download the upgrade package, is that a way to update a 5.0.0 hypervisor server to 5.0.1 or to do a fresh install of 5.0.1? I was doing fresh installs so when I seen the update 1 out, I was trying to figure out how to get it to install it as it seems like a completely insane and vague process if I wanted to update in the future from 5.0.0 to 5.0.1. The help kept referring to an upgrade manager, but the upgrade manager kept referring to not being free.

    ...crawls back into the blackhole....

    Greetings Damainman,

It seems at least at this point...you must follow Andre's advice given above and apply the update package to exsiting ESXi 5 installations in order to upgrade the intallation to the current update 1 level.

I did this yesterday and it worked fine.  I'm not sure why VMware has not updated the full download package so that new installs could be performed without the need to update.  It seems that they have offered this for the paid VSphere versions but not for the free hypervisor version.

In any event, applying the update is an easy process and accomplishes the same thing.

    Hi all,

Pay attention with upgrade to 5.0 U1 on free licensed hosts. This version has a problem with the Guest Autostart / Stop feature and enforce the maximum 32GB physical RAM "policy".

That means you must start and stop your Guests by yourself and if you have more than 32GB physical ram in your Server, esxi tells you that your "free" license is invalid... :/

    regards,

    Urs

    Gismo,

Thanks for the info...in my case...my server only has 32 GB of RAM...and I do not use the auto-start feature.

But this is good to know...

    Thanks...

Apologies for my late reply and for hi-jacking this thread.. Thank you for the responses. I am currently using 5.0 but with work and school, just been familiarizing myself with everything first and then go through the steps of upgrading. Have a great weekend everyone!
