Unknown error returned by VMware converter agent

Hi,

I am new to VMware and was trying to convert my labtop/physical machine into a virtual machine using the VMware converter. The target virtual machine is on the same labtop as i am trying this out. During converting, it goes to 97% and says ERROR: Unknown error returned by VMware Converter Agent. I realise there r other threads about this error but i don't see how they apply to me. Can any1 help me understand what i did wrong? Thanks

Hi,

When you have an error at 97% , you should try the "Configure machine" button on the VMware Converter interface.

Then, select your new machine,type your login and password,etc...

This process restores your file system ...

Before running configure machine, make sure your boot.ini file is pointing to the correct partition.

This can be done by mounting the .vmdk file to another virtual machine.

Usually Converter will fix this issue but sometimes it does not. This happens if you have had a diagnostic partition on the source machine. Make sure in the boot.ini file for the virtual machine it is pointing to partition 1.

Run the configuration machine option now and then try and turn on the virtual machine.

Hi, I've never "mounted the .vmdk file to another virtual machine"

How do I do that?

All you need to do is add the vmdk file to another machine as a secondary drive. Here are the steps:

1) Right click another windows VM

2) Edit Settings

3) Add

4) Hard Disk

4) Browse to the vmdk file that you would like to add

5) Open

6) Once the hard drive is added, Start your virtual machine

7) You may need to go to disk managment and rescan for the new hard drive
