  • 1.  Unble to delete snapshot ....

    Posted Apr 20, 2008 02:27 AM

    We are using ESX 3.5 (Build 32663) and VC 2.5 (Build 84767).

    When we attempt to commit a snapshot, we get the message "Operation Timed Out". When we attempt to commit the snapshot again, we get the error message "A general system error occured: Invalid fault".

    Your advice is sought.

    Usually the operation time out is just a VC message and the commit is still in progress. Just give it some more time and watch the folder where the vmdk is. How large is the snapshot?

    More than likely the snapshot was rather large and is still in the process of consolodating with the parent state. How big was the snapshot? If you start an SSH session into the ESX host, go into the directory containing the virtual machine, post the output of the following command:

    $ ls -l*.vmdk

    If you run that command again after 10 - 15 minutes, has the size of one ( or more ) of the 00000*.vmdk files reduced in size?

    Also check how much free space you have available on the storage. You may have run out, or are running low on available disk space. Post the output of the following command:

    $ vdf -h

    Thanks for both reply.

    The snapshot is of size 30GB and it does take time. It does take time and finally it has been deleted.

    On the other hand, we always encounter similar problem (unable to delete snapshot) when we use vRanger for VM backup.

    Thanks

    We use a script off of VCB to generate and remove the snaps and have found that if the snap was created with the script you have to remove it with the script, trying to remove it in VC will fail most of the time...
