  • 1.  Unable to add a host in virtualcenter server

    Posted Dec 23, 2008 03:39 PM

I had been running an evaluation version of VC until recently. I just purchased a license and reinstalled the latest version. When I attempt to add a host, the following error pops up and is entered into the host "tasks and events" list:

    - There are not enough licenses installed to perform the operation

Note that the Add Host wizard seems to run to completion.

The following errors appear in the datacenter "tasks and events" list:

    - A required license VirtualCenter Agent for ESX Server is not reserved

    - Connection failed for 132.246.94.20 in CSTT-Datacentre: Not enough CPU licenses

I am using mixed mode licensing and as far as I can tell in the documentation, running VC in license server mode and hosts (2) in stand-alone mode is allowed.

Have you added the new license file to the licence server? If you connect to the VC server and goto Administration -> Licences what do you see in the list for licenced features?

    Thanks,

    Neil

    Here is what is listed:

    VirtualCenter Foundation Management Server 1/server 0 1

Hi, OK, if you goto the Administration drop down on the menu bar and go into Virtualcenter Management Configuration, under Licence Server you'll have a tick box for "Change host licence server settings to match these Virtualcenter Server settings whenever a host is added to the inventory" if it has a tick in it take it out and try adding the host again.

    Thanks,

    Neil

    Hello again Neil,

I read that in the docs this morning, tried it and it did not succeed.

I'm looking at something else that may be causing this issue. I noticed that build numbers are important in tying all these components together so I ran the following command on the console:

    rpm -qa | grep VMware

The following items were listed (among many others):

    VMware-esx-vmkctl-3.5.0-110268

    VMware-esx-srvrmgmt-3.5.0-110268

    VMware-vpxa-2.5.0-119598

Is it possible I am trying to run incompatible versions of ESX and VC?

I just got off the phone with VMware tech support. It was confirmed that the licensing model is a little flaky. We had to re-acquire the HOST licenses in "License Server" mode rather using the "host based" licensing model.

    Neil:

    Your solution worked for me.
