  • 1.  Thin Provisioning - not working as expected

    Hi guys

I 've been playing around with Thin Provisioning in Vcenter 4 (ESX is still 3.5U4)

I formatted a new datastore with 8Mb blocks. I then used a cold storage vmotion to transport the VM. I told it to change the format to a Thin Provisioned volume.

Once complete I powered the VM back on and checked inside:

    Total 150G

    Used 72G

    Available 71G

    Percent Used 51%

    Inside vcenter:

    Provisioned Storage: 157.5GB

    Used Storage: 156.5GB

    Inside the SAN:

    Used storage: ~157GB

I've tried this on 3 VMs (all Redhat5). It has only successfully thin provisioned one of them, the others look as thick as the day they were born :smileyhappy:

Maybe is a bug of VC4 report, or of ESX 3.5 :smileyhappy:

If you use du -sh *vmkd (in the VM folder) what's the result compared to ls -lh *vmdk?
