This is a generic question across the product groups but i did not see a forum for this.

I have occasionally (wheither ESX, Local WorkStation, vCentre or Lab Manager) see occasions where the cloning of a vm or use of a template has not done a proper sysprep, e.g. new machine name, SID (possibly, not sure MAC address).

    >> Is it the case that VMTools has to always be installed in the base VM for this to work properly ? and / or the correct version of vmtools ? (e.g. when a vm with vmtools, is moved between product families)

Most of the VMWare systems still allow a clone even if vmtools is not installed.

=> I am after the golden rules to ensure no problems in the future ?

=> Is there a tool to compare the PC SIDs of two machines ?

    Thanks
