Has anyone tried storage vmotioning their virtual center VM?

Also - what are your opinions on storage vmotioning SQL and AD servers? I'm really nervous with this so still power them off and migrate them.....

I haven't tried the svmotion of my vc yet. But I will be doing it in a couple of weeks.

I would have no issue with svmotion'ing sql, but I would shut down the db, to be extra careful for larger databases. For AD, I would have to agree, shut down and migrate.

I have SVmotioned my VC without issue a few times. Although not officially supported I have SVmotioned from NFS to Local then back to NFS DS without issue.

I migrated about 30 VMs (windows/linux) with the http://code.lostcreations.com/wiki/vmware/viplugins/svmotion?id=code/wiki/vmware/viplugins/svmotion plugin without problems recently

to a falconstor/ipstor virtual device, some with running SQL databases also.

Yes I use the same plugin - works great. I moved the VC VM.... however I powered it off before migration....

SVmotion worked great for me when migrating multiple servers to a new SAN, did a ping -t on the server I was migrating and only lost one ping just the same as vmotion.

I have had great success with SV-Motion as well. I have moved my VC VM from LUN to LUN without a problem. I have also mvoe VMs that have small instances of MS SQL running, again without a problem. I have ony have 1 failure out of approx 40 moves. I am still investigating that 1st failure. The 1 that failed had a vmdk of 100gig (not a standard VM by any means).

I do not recommend any 3rd party tools for managing the SV-Motion. Use the built in Command line scripts. svmotion.pl --interactive (this is fully supported).
