  • 1.  Standard to Distributed Switch - VMs network traffic dropping

    Hi

I have a strange issue.  We have a small 3 host cluster.  I am in the processing for migrating from standard switches to distributed switches.

We are running 6.5.  ESXi build is 7388607.

When I migrate VMs to the DS, some not all, lose network connectivity.  There does not seem to be rhyme or reason to it.  The only consistent thing has been Windows VMs.  NIC adapter does not make a difference.  I did find a work around to it.  If I make any VM hardware change, once it is applied the traffic comes back online.  At first I added a second NIC to a VM, and immediately the traffic started flowing.  I then moved another VM same thing.  This time I added a CD/DVD drive, traffic came back.  If I migrate a problematic VM back to a SS, no issue.  Then if I move it back to the DS, issue returns.  I tried different hardware versions and NICs and the issue does not seem to be tied to either one.  I also migrated some Linux VMs without issue.

I hunted high and low for anything related to this with no success.  My concern is in a fail-over scenario with a host going down, will that potentially cause my issue to return.  I'm not convinced it will, but I don't want to find out on a weekend that was the case.

I figured I would toss it out there.

    Thanks

    Josh

Have you checked for any error in VM log file immediately after migration to DVS?

To me this sounds as if one of physical switch ports to which the vDS is connected, isn't configured properly, e.g. a missing VLAN, ...

Please explain how the connection to the physical network looks like, and how you configured it in the vDS properties.
