  • 1.  SSD or Flash caching accelerators for vSphere

    Posted May 09, 2012 01:29 PM

    Hello,

We are starting to research the ssd/flash accelerator products that are on the market.  We are looking to use these to help speed up the performance of our vSphere LUNs on our iSCSI SAN.

Does anyone have experience with any of these products?  Are there other products that I may be missing?

    Thank you,

    Kevin

The feedback we have received so far has not been too positive on using any caching devices.  Generally the consensus has been that these are on the bleeding edge and vendor support and certification has not been established yet.

The recommendations we keep getting are along the lines of using a SAN that has some form of SSD caching, SSD trays, dynamic tiering, etc.
I personally think keeping your cached I/O on the host is better than hitting a cache across the network so I think this market is primed to take off, but it doesn't seem to be picking up too much steam yet.

I just ran across Tintri yesterday - it's a mixed flash/SATA appliance that you mount like any other NFS datastore.  The product looks interesting but I'm not quite ready to open up the checkbook yet, especially for a non-VDI site like ours.
