  • 1.  Some questions regarding guided consolidation

    Posted Sep 17, 2008 08:53 PM

    Hi,

I am using the consolidation tool to do some analysis on a few physical boxes.

I haven't used it before and I am not sure what to make out of results.

My status is set to analyzing. I suppose this means it is still doing its job. How long does an analysis take?

The confidence metric just displays 4 dots at the moment.

Also when selecting an entry and clicking planning consolidation it shows me a dropdown list containing all ESX boxes.

I also have a destination rating of 5 stars for each. Thid does not seem to change when changing destination.

What am I suppose to look for to be confident that the server would make a good virtual candidate?

PS: One of my entries analysis just changed to "remote registry disabled or collector service not running" This appeared after 20 minutes of showing analysis. What could be the cause of this

I have given domain admin "log on as service" on all servers including VC. Remote registry enabled on all servers and I started vcpcollector.exe on VC

Any info + documentation would be appreciated

    Cheers

    Hi AllBlack,

I know this question is a bit old, but I am sure many people will still stumble by it every now and then. In addition, the answer for this question seems not obvious to many people, so I will try to put you on the right track.

Confidence Metric: is the degree to which VirtualCenter can

gather performance data about the system and how good a candidate the

system is based on the available data.

Destination Rating: is how suitable the host to consolidate the virtual machine to it.

A great document to find more information about guided consolidation would be:

I hope this help some one, if it does please reward points.
