Software iSCSI Target?

I have a Dell MD1120 that I want to use for iSCSI storage for our new Veeam Backup solution. I was hoping to integrate this with our existing MD3000i or MD1000 but apparently it is not possible.

What do people use for software iSCSI targets? I am looking for something that will have the best performance and not hard to setup.

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe the MD1120 can only be attached to the newer MD3200 and MD3220 arrays, not the older 3000 (which I also have).

If you've got another box you can use in front of the MD1120 then look at OpenFiler, FreeNAS, NexentaStor (18TB max unless you pay for it but you get ZFS w/ compression and dedup), NexentaCore (no UI), etc.

You can consider to attach this storage to a host or a physical server.

The PERC/E controllers are supported by VMware.

So would I just install ESXi on this and the storage will show up as local storage for that Host? I am guessing there is no way to then share the storage so that all hosts in the cluster would have access?

I don't think you read the instructions on how to set this up. We have it working, ALL of this is documented in ESX manuals, the MD3200 and cluster your hosts.

We have it working so I know you can EXACTLY that. If you take the time to actually READ the manual, you will find this is EASY and it works fine.

I dont have an MD3200 so I have no idea what you are talking about. I was responding to Andre's post about setting it up the MD1120 with an ESX host. And was wondering if I did that if there was a way to share this among the other hosts.

MD3000i or MD3200i same difference. I don't understand where you jump to the conclusion "not possible". Not only is it POSSIBLE, but there is a step by step included in the manual. Did you try calling Dell? They can help with BOTH ESX and the MD3000i at the same time, and help you set it up. But they will tell you the same thing, it's in the manual.

Also veeam will work for ANY target you setup, provided you configured the MD3000i properly and ESX. Some features won't work in a VM, so veeam MAY require a physical machine to properly be setup.

I came to the conclusion of "not possible" because I posted something on Dell's Support site and from jasonlitka's post which says it can only be attached to the MD3200. So that is where i assumed it was "not possible" so if it is possible why dont you point me to a link of one of the manuals that says you can hook an MD1120 to a MD3000i?

So please if you know something these people dont then I would love to figure this out.

The MD3000i and the MD3200i are not the same and I was explicitly told by Dell that the MD1120 would NOT work with the MD3000i, even at SAS 3Gb speeds.

If that's not true and you have such a setup in production, please do share as I'd love to know, I'm running a bit short on 15K storage. Otherwise, I'm sticking with what I posted and not burning my money to find out.
