  • 1.  Should I disable EVC ?

    Posted Oct 10, 2017 10:59 AM

    Hi,

I see in our 6.0 u3 envionment that EVC is still enabled from when we replaced our hosts.

The 3 hosts are identical so I wonder if we should disable EVC or not.

Is there an impact on performance on VMs from EVC setting below the CPU installed ?

Its currently set to Intel Haswell and the hosts have E5-2660 v3 @2.60GHz.

    Thanks

I would keep it enabled but on the newest level your cpu's support. So in case you ever want to add or replace a node that you dont have to re-enable it.

I will say nothing harm to keep EVC ON forever.

As long as you don't have plan to add new server into the same cluster then you can keep evc disabled.

    Regards

the answer depends on what the new hardware you will procure.

Intel Haswell is up there at the top of supported EVC baselines.. so you are probably not missing much or of any advanced CPU features.

Any further hardware you buy if it is going to be better than E5-2600 V3 than keep it enabled.. if you plan to buy the same hardware in the furture and can afford some downtime you can disable it also

EVC is a cluster configuration that is applied to ESX hosts similar to DRS and HA. Just like DRS and HA, EVC can be disabled and does not require a host reboot. In addition, this should have no impact on the existing VMs. One thing to note is that EVC settings do not take effect on a VM unless the VM is powered off and then powered on (a reboot is not sufficient). As such, any features you may gain after disabling EVC will not take effect until the VM is powered off and then back on.
