we have 4 hosts and we want to setup a heartbeat connection between two VM's but these VM's will be residing on different hosts. We currently just setup a virtual switch with no nic but this only works if the two VM's resides on the same host. We would like to place the VM's on different host. Is there a simple way of doing this?

    Welcome to the Community,

in this case you - obviously - need a physical connection. This can be achieved by either adding an uplink to the current vSwitch or - if you have VLANs in place - you could just create a new port group with the appropriate VLAN-ID for the heartbeats on an existing vSwitch.

It may also depend on the heartbeat requirements which solution you choose.

if we add an uplink to the vswitch, this will put it on the public network which we do not want.

What kind of physical hardware (switches) do you have? Do they support VLANs?

Unless you are not able to separate traffic on the switches, you may try whether a cross-over cable can do the job.

Does the VM do their internal heartbeat on a secondary vNIC attached to them?

I agree with A.P. that you should be able to solve this with just configure a new VLAN on your physical switch and then create a new portgroup with this VLAN and bind to the VMs heartbeat vNIC.
