  • 1.  Schedule migration (cold migration)

So we just purchased a shinny new EVA6000 and I have one host attached to it. My plan was to cold migration from my old servers and MSA1000. My hope was that I could schedule this as a task so it did it while I was sleeping.

So when I go into the tasks, I can easily create the shutdown task but when I try the:

    Relocate a Virtual Machine

option as a task it says it cannot access the config files because the server attached to the EVA does not have a path to the MSA1000, as if its trying to use Vmotion and not a cold migration.

Is there some other way to schedule to the power off, move and power on that I'm missing without using Vmotion?

I think the host needs to be powered off when you schedule the task. It works fine for me if the host is powered off, but when it is on it gives me an error. It seems like you should be able to do this, maybe Vmware needs to improve on this.

I haven't done this, but it is just something come up to mmy mind. It is a work around.

    Schedule the following tasks

    1) Power off the VM first

    2) Clone the VM to the new server and the new datastore

    3) Power on the new VM

Next morning when you come in to work, make sure the new VM is working fine and delete the old VM
