If the server is an upgrade from 2.5 then it will move the VMX file to the VMFS with the rest of the files for the VM.

    From the online manual:

Upgrading ESX Server : Relocating Virtual Machines

    \----

    Relocating Virtual Machines

This operation moves the .vmx configuration file from the ESX Server host to the VMFS3 datastore. At the end of this operation, all virtual machine data and configuration files reside in one folder on the datastore.

    To relocate virtual machines

1 Right-click the ESX Server host in the VI Client inventory, and choose Relocate VM files from the drop-down menu.

When the relocation is complete, a dialog box appears with the following message: “The virtual machine files for host have been relocated successfully.”

2 Click OK to dismiss the dialog box.

I think the is for upgraded servers and will relocate things like the vmx file for a VM to the new ESX3 directory structure, it's mentioned here....

Why do we always complain about the manuals, when we know we're not going to use them anyways? :smileylaugh:

Same here. Just had an "oh no second" when curiousity got the better of me. I was expecting a dialogue box - it just said 'completed'. Hope I haven't broken anything.

And I'm in charge of the virtual infrastructure here?! LOL.

    Hi. My name is Brian.

    (crowd responds) "Hi Brian"

And I'm a recovering button pusher like you.

(crowd responds with nods and knowing grunts)

Hi guys, my name is Shawn... in addition to being a binge drinker I also like to push buttons when I have no idea what they do… it’s especially dangerous when my two favorite past times (drinking and pushing buttons) unite in a maintenance window… gotta love liquid courage! :smileywink:

Actually – when I saw “Move VMs to Directories” I thought I had discovered the holy grail or something… after recently removing a host from my vCenter (while trying to troubleshoot a VM disconnect problem: http://communities.vmware.com/message/1424990#1424990)

I figured that this button would bring up a GUI that would allow me to move all my VMs from the root folder back into the directory structure that I had previously setup. Apparently it is not what I thought it was… back to drag and drop!

2 1/2 years later and we are still clicking this? How about a second prompt with the text pasted from the manual? It would save a lot of heart attacks!
