  • 1.  Resource Allocation - Looking for some clarification

    Posted May 02, 2012 04:21 AM

    Ki Ora,

I have a 4.1 cluster that states in the Resource Allocation tab of the DC

    Memory

    Total Capacity          :133112MB

    Reserved Capacity  :54497MB

    Available Capacity     :78615MB

My question is regarding reserved capacity. I understand there is a memory overhead per vm depending on how many vCPUs and what memory is allocated per virtual machine as in the chart below. The ESX host OS takes its share, I will make the assumption that this is not included in the 'Reserved Capacity' total due to the physical total being 144GB, i.e. 10GB give or take has been allocated to the cluster nodes already?

... doing some quick calculations the figures (54497MB) vs vm vCPU/Mem don't add up. 54GB is a fair chunk of our pool - What am I missing to get to this total?

    Thanks in advance!

    Brendan

Looks like this post answers my question!

Summary it is a simple calculation of your total estimated Memory  overhead for a cluster, you add up each hosts mem overhead plus all the  VMs Mem overhead :smileyhappy:

    Hi,

Do you have any reservations set, for instance manual Reservation settings on Resource Pools for the same cluster? That would contribute to the number presented by Reserved Capacity

    Thanks Peter,

Reservations are not used in our environment, we were told to let VMWare do its thing dynamically rather than to manually tweak bits here and there (Could potentially become an admin nightmare down the track)

    Thanks for your reply!
