  • 1.  Resize LUN & VMFS?

    Hi All,

Currently have a Managment LUN which has my vCenter VM on, which is starting to get a bit low on space. I dont have storage vMotion so can't do that, so question is, I can resize the LUN (Lefthand P4300) but can I then resize the VMFS without affecting the vCenter VM?

If so how would I go about this?

Otherwise, would I be best to shutdown the vCenter VM, connect to the physical ESXi 4.1 host, vMotion(cold) to another VMFS, recreate the LUN, vMotion(cold) it back and then power up vCenter VM?

    Thanks,

    Andy

    Andy,

since ESX 4.0 you can grow the VMFS on the fly. Just resize the LUN on your storage system, rescan the iSCSI adapter on your host(s) and then use the wizard to grow the VMFS datastore (unless you already have extents on the datastore, use volume growth instead of adding the additional disk space as an extent). This can be done online, however I prefer to do this at a time without heavy traffic. After doing this run another rescan and everything should be fine.

In some cases I needed to grow the datastore by connecting directly to a host instead of vCenter.

Worked perfectly thanks! Tried it with a test LUN first just in case and went fine, so did it with my vCenter management LUN and it didn't miss a beat. Thanks!
