Rescue a VMFS partition

  • 1.  Rescue a VMFS partition

    Posted Feb 29, 2012 04:56 PM

    Hi All,

Im cross posting in ESX 3.5 as well ( as install was on 3.5 ) but issue is the same I think.

So, for an unknown reason, the system has crashed.

my colleague tried to reinstall the system, asking to keep the VMFS partition.

From this point, maybe there was some changes applied on the 1st partition i assume... the point is that we can not install the system anymore as it syas no more space ...strnage..what ever...

So, now finally the question !  :

How can I check if the VMFS partition is still here on the disk ( or lost maybe, but want to ensure at 100% )

IF, the partition is still here, how can I transfers the VM on it to another storage ( via FTP, maybe USB storage ..Etc..what ever ...)

    thanks for your help !

We managed to re-install a 3.5 ( It says we are in audit mode )

When we click on add storage, here what we have ( screenshot )

For me, it do not recognize VMFS ...why ? any idea ? or my understanding is false ?

    Thx

    Hi

Very little chance that you will be able to restore your vmfs storage :smileysad: , but however take a look Recovering a lost partition table on a VMFS volume & Recovering a lost partition table on a VMFS volume

    Hi

After problems as I di not want to do more writes to the main volume

i added one disk on the basic controler of the mainboard ( in SATA ) and installed a 4.0.1

here is the output of esxcfg-mpath -l

    pscsi.vmhba4-pscsi.0:0-mpx.vmhba4:C0:T0:L0

       Target Identifier: sata.0:0
       Plugin: NMP
       State: active
       Transport: sata

    ---

As you can see, the drive is recognized ( it s the vmhba4 of 1,16TB )

on this 1,6 TB, I should have a VMFS partition ... somewhere  :smileysad: ...do you know so how can I get it back.

Important to say, there was an install which was redone ( keeping the same config but an install anyway ..)

    Thx !

    Lionel

    it' s an adaptec RAID 2820 .

At first, this was an 3.5 ... old one we were suppose to migrate and lazy ..we did not ... problem is that we have 1 critical VM which was running on this

execute this command from the ssh session.

    # hexdump -C /vmfs/devices/disks/<naa id of the device which has the partition> | less

if the output has the UUID then we can confirm the disk has VMFS volume. if so, its easy to restore the partion. You can contact VMware support for the same.

    # hexdump -C /vmfs/devices/disks/vmhba0\:0\:0\:10 | less

once you recreated the partition with fdisk it may still not be readable with esx
Then boot the server with a Linux LiveCD and recover the data usings vmfs-tools
here is a link to a ready to use CD I made for that purpose

    Yezdi, Continuum,  All,

First, apologies for not followin up.

As a problem never occur alone, finally, we had 2 criticals VMs on this storage.. and we spent the week to reinstall everything on another Server ( LDAP Dir..). On the top of this, we lost the remote connection for an unkown reason ...

Back to my problem as I'm now in front of the console, I can run the commands you suggested.

    First, in my directory /vmfs/devices/disks/ , here is what I have ( for vmhba4 only ) :

    mpx.vmhba4:C0:T0:L0
    mpx.vmhba4:C0:T0:L0:1
    mpx.vmhba4:C0:T0:L0:4
    mpx.vmhba4:C0:T0:L0:5
    mpx.vmhba4:C0:T0:L0:6
    mpx.vmhba4:C0:T0:L0:7
    mpx.vmhba4:C0:T0:L0:8

So now, trying the hexdump, here are the result...no VMFS as far I understand no ??? :smileysad:

    hexdump -C /vmfs/devices/disks/mpx.vmhba4\:C0\:T0\:L0\:1 |less

    Hi LionelM

Welcome to the community.  What does esxcfg-mpath -l report on the host with the issue?    Also check the vmkwarning logs   e.g.   cat /var/log/vmkwarning.

    Hi all,

Is my VMFS partition is just dead forever and this is why I don't have more answers ? :smileysad: ?

    Thx

    Lionel

    Hi
sorry - I missed your last post.
If you want lets continue via skype - I send you a PM.

Handling such tricky issues via the forum is not my first choice - too risky IMHO

my apologies, i've overlooked your reply.  cant find a VMFS volume from the Hexdump output, there is no VMFS uuid. In this state,  I would recommend to contact vmware support to get more detailed analysis. If VMFS data is present in the disk, ofcourse vmware support can help you in getting it added to partition table again.

If vmware is helpless you can contact Kroll ontrack or seagate recovery services for getting vmfs volume back.
