  • 1.  reduce vmdk size after shrinking wndows partition

    Hi,

after in-place upgrade of Server 2008 to 2012 I have a lot of free space on C: partition.

The VMDK is on Thin provisioning. So, I guess it is not necessary to shrink partition and then go through the "surgery" of vmdk, since it will not give any advantage of returning "free" space to the storage.

    Am I correct?

    Thanks.

Thats correct, you dont need to shrink it as it will only consume the storage required. It uses UNMAP to reclaim back storage that is no longer used by a VM

See this for more details: Storage Space Reclamation
