'Recommended controller is full' message after conversion

  • 1.  'Recommended controller is full' message after conversion

    Posted Oct 22, 2014 08:27 PM

I have recently converted a Windows XP PC and imported it into our ESXi environment.  I am now trying to add a CD/DVD drive to the guest, but I am receiving the following error:

"Recommended controller is full, New CD/DVD Drive is placed on SATA(0:0)"

I proceeded with applying the changes using SATA(0:0), but the drive never appeared on the guest, but an unknown PCI device did show up in Device Manager.  Rebooting the guest and removing/re-adding the CD/DVD drive from vCenter have no effect.  If I try to manually set the drive to use IDE(0:0) like most of the other guests are configured, I receive a message saying this operation cannot be performed in the current state (powered on)....although I'm not sure what else would be using IDE?

The guest is configured as follows:

    VM Version 10

    Hard Disk 1

Buslogic Parallel 0 (I tried LSI, but did not work...I guess driver does not exist in XP?

    No - CD/DVD

    No - Floppy

    No - USB

    SATA Controller 0

Any ideas as to what I can check?

Have you tried changing to IDE with powered off VM?
