    Hello.

I am going through the motions of setting up the backups for the vCenter servers in our clusters. I have a destination

system in place, and I have confirmed FTP, SFTP, and SMB are available for this purpose.

However, whenever I do an interactive backup, the following error condition occurs on both vcenter systems:

I had a heck of a time getting this to work. Settled on CIFS.

See what errors you're getting in the backup log file here:  var/log/vmware/applmgmt/backup.log

Ive used FTP, SFTP, and SMB (CIFS) without issue.  Check permissions on the target and test with another utility (FileZilla, WinFTP, etc).

I did further investigating and it appears the certificates that are used by the vSphere machines are the cause. The certificates expired on December 26th. Both certificates were self-signed, so it appears I will need to renew them. Would the vCert utility be the best method?

Yes, vCert will help you resolve certificate expirations.  Just follow the instructions in the KB.
