    Hello,

I have a HP ProLiant DL360 G7 server that has ESXi 6.7 running on it. Recently I bought a new Samsung 870 EVO SSD to upgrade the storage on the server. However, when I placed the new storage device in the server ESXi cannot detect the new device at all. the only device it can detect is the one local storage that the OS is installed on. I looked throughout the forums and it seems that no one  else has the same problem that I have. Can anyone help?

Maybe no one tried to install a current SSD device on a ten year old server yet that runs an unsupported ESXi version

    Some thoughts.

    • Does the SSD show up in the BIOS and/or iLO, i.e. is it detected at all?
    • If the SSD is detected by the server itself, can you confirm that a compatible driver is installed which supports the server's SATA interface?

    Hello.

All Server manufacturers use disc controllers with specific firmware, which only recognize discs also with specific firmware.

In some case, update the BIOS and Frimware of the disc controller helps identify new devices, but these devices must be supported and certified by the server manufacture..

Most likely your server have a "real" HW RAID Controller and you need to create a Diskgroup with a VD within the Raid controller first. If you only have a single Disk(SSD) you have to create a RAID0.
They are RAID controllers out there which can switch between RAID or Passtrough mode as well.
