P2V Speed using Converter Standalone

It's been quite some time since I've P2V'd anything and I wanted to get a poll to see if something was wrong with my setup or if it's just how Converter works.

It's not an actual P2V - I'm trying to move a VM from a test server (ESXi 3.5) to our new vSphere (4.0) production server. I used Standalone Converter to move the virtual machine but it said that it was going to take a whopping 6 hours. Converter was doing about 5-6MB/s during the transmit, but our 30GB harddrive said it was going to take 5 hours which didn't seem to add up correctly.

Is Converter usually this slow? The NICs are set to 1000-Full and our switch is set to Auto/Auto on the ports.

why do you use Converter for that task ???

I would use FastSCP

Because I'm migrating the VM from the local disk based storage system to a SAN based storage system. I don't know if it would be possible to move it from a local disk to the SAN via FastSCP.

I have been using VMware converter for several years and it allmost seems that the better (more functions) it gets - the slower it gets.

Nowadays (build 4.0.1 161434) it is not unusual to see as little as 2 MB/s when it is running file-level copying. Block- and volume-level copies runs faster but then you can not change disksizes.

My advice ? Just be patient G

You can able to copy the files using the FastSCP from local disk storage to Shared storage.

Tried to use FastSCP, still got the same data transfer rates. Could it be my SAN? Is this data transfer rate normal when moving/converting VMs?

Patience only goes so far when I have limited hours to make the moves and these are production machines. :P
