vmware converter logs attached to this post. The server is windows 2000 sp4 and has 2 physical disks which are marked as "simple" dynamic in windows. the failure is at the os reconfig stage in the newly created VM. I have tried the local admin account.

    appreciate any help offered

I'm no help for you sorry, but I have seen it myself. I get the exact same errors - can't get past 97% conversion for any of the file types I've tried so far which includes StorageCraft shadow protect files (.spf), symantec backup exec system recovery files (.v2i) and Microsoft Virtual PC 2003 files (.vhd). All these machines have multiple drives, the OS normally on the D: drive.

I chose to reduce disk sizes to around 1 GB above the minimum and chose to create a full clone for server 1.x., and chose 1 nic as 'host only'. The OS's disks being converted were either Server 2003 or Windows XP. No anti-virus was scanning the virtual machines folder either. So I too would appreciate any clues to resolving this issue.... Regards, Bryce S.

Can you try using the converter bootCD and select ALL partitions without resizing. Does this work?

Hi, I can't choose not to resize as I'm trying to place some of our servers into a virtual test environment - the servers have disk sizes up to 500Gb, but only used space on the drives I want of anywhere from 8Gb to 32Gb (my pc only has a maximum all up free of around 70Gb). Also, I can't boot the converter CD to create the virtual machines as these are live production servers I'm trying to copy/convert. I was really hoping that the converter worked off snapshot images taken by backup software (eg. symantec or storagecraft offerings). Thanks for your input. Regards, Bryce S.

Thanks for replying, :smileyhappy: this is a live webserver so getting downtime is hard. When I did manage to get downtime the converter cd didn't help. I even downloaded the dell perc2 drivers to floppy and loaded them but it still failed to read the guest OS info (RAID drivers I suspect).

I have done many legacy servers with Windows 2000 before and had minimal problems. This is the only one so far with windows dynamic disks and the converter error log complains about parsing the boot.ini to locate the bootable partition. Is it possible that the dynamic disk config is upsetting the whole process? For now, I created a temp virgin VM and restored a full windows backup of the physical box to the virtual. The VM is sitting there raring to go. The thing is I have many more of these legacy servers to virtualise and it would be great to know the problem from the outset so I can cure it as it occurs. I'm sure if I click the "restore basic configuration" option in windows disk management I'll have success with the hot clone. Now I have the VM up I am going to try my theory on the physical box, if anything goes wrong I have the VM on standby.

I'll post back how I get on :smileywink:

    Regards

When you used the bootCD, was it able to display the drive partitions at all or is this where is fails? Did you feed the drivers to the bootCD using the windows XP drivers for the dell perc controllers? The bootCD is closest match to windows XP (not windows 2000).

Can you post a copy of your boot.ini and a screenshot of diskmanagement?

the problem was the boot.ini, some monkey had edited it on a previous occasion :smileyangry: . There was a missing [

    P2V continues unhindered now :smileywink:
