Thanks for replying, :smileyhappy: this is a live webserver so getting downtime is hard. When I did manage to get downtime the converter cd didn't help. I even downloaded the dell perc2 drivers to floppy and loaded them but it still failed to read the guest OS info (RAID drivers I suspect).
I have done many legacy servers with Windows 2000 before and had minimal problems. This is the only one so far with windows dynamic disks and the converter error log complains about parsing the boot.ini to locate the bootable partition. Is it possible that the dynamic disk config is upsetting the whole process? For now, I created a temp virgin VM and restored a full windows backup of the physical box to the virtual. The VM is sitting there raring to go. The thing is I have many more of these legacy servers to virtualise and it would be great to know the problem from the outset so I can cure it as it occurs. I'm sure if I click the "restore basic configuration" option in windows disk management I'll have success with the hot clone. Now I have the VM up I am going to try my theory on the physical box, if anything goes wrong I have the VM on standby.
I'll post back how I get on :smileywink:
