I need to P2V an old Windows 2000 server.

What VMware converter version should I use?

    Is it advisable to

    • use the latest version of VMware Converter and P2V the server starting from a Symantec backup

    or to

    • install VMware Converter (what version?) on the server itself (can I install VMware Converter without creating any problem to the existing applications?) an use it to convert the server?

    Regards

    Hi,

use VMware Standalone Converter version 4.0.1 (4.3 and later doesn't support Windows 2000)

Download it here: VMware vCenter Converter Standalone

    Guide: https://www.vmware.com/pdf/converter_standalone_guide401.pdf

    Supported destinations:

    VMware Workstation 6.5.x, 6.0.x, and 5.x

    VMware Player 1.x, 2.0.x, and 2.5.x

    VMware Server 1.x and 2.x

    VMware Fusion 1.x and 2.x

    ESX Server 3.x and 4.0

ESXi 3.5 and 4.0 Installable and ESXi 3.5 and 4.0 Embedded

    vCenter Server 2.x and 4.0

OVF and OVA virtual appliances, OVF spec version 1.0

    For more details see:

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1 Release Notes

Before conversion update your server to SP4 (KB891861):

VMware KB: A Windows 2000 virtual machine created using P2V Assistant fails

Install VMware Converter (what version?) on the server itself (can I install VMware Converter without creating any problem to the existing applications?) an use it to convert the server?

You ca safely install Converter Standalone directly on physical source without affecting existing applications... when you install converter chose "Local Installation".

As destination type chose VMware Workstation if you do not have 4.x vCenter or ESX host ...

    Welcome to communities.

First you need to check compatibility , If latest P2V conversion support windows 2000 then definitely you can do that..
