  • 1.  One Disk, Two partitions

I have several physical servers that have one logical disk (typically a mirror or raid) split into separate partitions for C and D drives. When I run converter it places both off these partitions into a single vmdk virtual disk file. Other than using PowerConvert, is there a way within VMWare Converter to split these two partitions out to separate vmdk files during the conversion process?

    Thanks in Advance..

No afaik there is no option to take your dual partition disk and change this into to separate disks. Converter is doing a sector level copy in order to get the job done, so the disk is copied completely bit for bit (or byte by byte if you like) But you can always do this afterwards using for example a tool like BartPE loaded with Partition Image. Suppose you knew that last one and are looking for a way to do this faster. Which is probably the niche that Powerconvert fills.

Beware that if you have a software raid 1 using dynamic disks on your physical system, that you will need to break the raid before you can use converter to P2 V the system.

Also have a look at this page: http://www.vmware-land.com/Converter.html as it contains a good summary of best practices.

I appreciate the help. Thanks for the BP link - that's a great summary.

    Hi.

I need to do the same thing. So, I will try user a converter more one time. The first time I convert only partition C (virtualmachineC), in the second time I convert only partition D to another VM (virtualmachineD).

After I will import (vmkfstools -i) the disk of virtualmachineD to dir where are the files of virtualmachineC.
