  • 1.  NVMe + SSD combination: caching writes or both reads and writes

    Posted Jun 01, 2018 07:18 AM

    Hello,

I have a question regarding using NVMe as caching device, and SSDs as capacity devices.

Is this some variant of Hybrid or All-flash implementation, regarding caching? I mean, is NVMe used for caching writes only (as in all-flash) or for caching reads and writes (as in hybrid implementation)?

    Thanks in advance

    Hello ezenkiel

"Is this some variant of Hybrid or All-flash implementation, regarding caching?"

It is an All-Flash implementation - however the IO to cache (NVMe here) go directly to this device as opposed to via the controller to the cache-SSD as they would when using a SATA/SAS SSD as cache-tier.

"I mean, is NVMe used for caching writes only (as in all-flash) or for caching reads and writes (as in hybrid implementation)?"

    100% write-cache as in any All-Flash implementation.
