No power action with free hypervisor license ?

After installing a free hypervisor 6 license, it is impossible switching on or off a vitual guest. After removing the license, it works fine. Why ? ESXi Embedded Host Client could be the best solution for managing one or a small number of hypervisors. IMHO it doesn't make sense in environments with vSphereCenter, but it seems such license is necessary.

is this happening with all the VMs in your host when you apply hypervisor only (free) license?

did you try power operation with vSphere Client?

what's the configuration of the VM which you are trying to power on and not happening when your host is free hypervisor licensed?

The ESXi was updated from 5.1 to 6.0.0 update 1. A new license is required. I took the license from the download site. Before I installed the license, I could power on or off any VM. After that, no power operations successful. After removing the license (the host is now again in evaluation mode) power operations working fine.

In both cases power control was possible by using Workstation. I didn't test it with the vSphere Client.

In which configuration detail you are interested ?

It's likely the known issue mentioned at https://labs.vmware.com/flings/esxi-embedded-host-client

On ESXi hosts which are assigned a VMware vSphere Hypervisor license, all modification operations will fail silently. We are working on a solution to this issue.

What has this issue to with the license ? Which license would work ?

For now, the demo license (e.g. no license / time limited) or any paid license.

We are aware of the problem and intend to address it, but cannot give details right now.

Do you have any idea of a timescale to resolve this, or due to recent news is this project now stopped?

If so would open sourcing the code be possible?

I think this project along with a number of others should not be dropped.

    The project is definitely continuing.

We needed to make a server-side change to enable interoperability with the free hypervisor license. It's a simple change, but it has not yet been released.

Can't talk about release dates / release contents (company policy), but the sort of change needed is what we put in update releases. Careful observers will note there has not been an update release since the issues with the free hypervisor license came to light.

The free Hypervisor license has some restrictions, like a restrictions for the API. I guess that this is what causes some commands to fail with this license. Any other license (Essentials or better, even Evaluation mode which equals the Enterprise Plus license) do not have such restrictions.

Is there any place I can monitor or list I can sign up for so I will be notified when this issue is addressed? I also have the free license of ESX and it is certainly annoying not to be able to use the UI to manage it. For now I need to keep a Windows VM running just for that purpose.

According to this comment by one of the fling's authors the issue will be fixed in ESXi 6.0 U2 which should be out some time in March:
