  • 1.  No connection in seperate virtual network (without uplink)

    Posted Apr 20, 2020 08:00 AM

    Hi,

Within Esxi 6.3 I'm trying to make a separate network between 2 virtuals (both on the same host). Unfortunately I'm unable to connect the machines.

I've created a new vSwitch with a new port. Both machines (FreeBSD & win10) are on that network. Both machines have a static ip address.

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction of what I'm doing wrong here :smileyhappy:

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Strange here is that both machines are booted but only the 1 seems to be active (that is the pfSense/FreeBSD machine).

    FreeBSD machine

    W10 machine

    a few questions:

    - why did you enable promiscious mode on the vswitch ?

    - why did you assign manual mac-addresses ?

    - why is the mac-address of the win-vm 00:00:00:00:00 ?

I tried promiscious mode because I found it at one of the forums as a suggestion (also tried it in default mode).

The win10 machine has an automatic Mac address, if I have automatic selected the mac shown in the box is 00:00:00:00:00 (I guess that is default). I cant edit the mac address once I select automatic.

However! I changed it back to manual, filled in a Mac address, changed it back to Automatic then it worked! Now I see both of the machines as "Active" in the switch!

ok - fine that it is working.

the mac with only zeros ist an invalid mac - i wonder that the host didnt assigned one from his pool.

when trying to use manual addresses you should be careful which addresses you use - theres a difference between unicast and multicast addresses
