newbie questions

hi, my startup company has invested in a new server and i wanted to give ESXi a go. i've run into a few issues though and would appreciate some help

1) i've installed ESXi 4.0 and vSphere 4.0 successfully on my sunfire x4100M2 box and i want to install Debian Server 5.0 as the first VMware appliance. I found the files in the VMWare market place and have downloaded/unzipped them to my disk. I can't see what the next step should be, any tips?

2) I've seen mention of a free version vSphere 4.0 but i can't find the license file they talk about it. Does such a thing exist?

3) if the afore mentioned free vSphere 4.0 does exist can run regular snapshots of my VM's for backup purposes? Do I need the full version of vSphere to be able to make backups?

Use VMware Converter to import into your ESXi.

You have to register your version. Go on www.vmware.com / account

Snapshot are not a online-backup or versioning tools. Use FastSCP, gettoVCB, or other backup tools.
