    I a newb fresh out of a ccna class so I guess this will be good practice for me.

    Here's what im looking to do with my works network

    I want to get a couple of my vm's on another vlan so they are separated from my main network because they will be exposed to the internet. I've watched a couple video's and I noticed they have distributed switch which shows up in there inventory is this because I am using the free version of VMware Esxi?.

    Mines on the right

    What;s the best way to go about this I only have on nic in on this server so I am assuming and need to create a vswitch and setup trunking between it and my Dell power connect 5448.

    My current network Config

    PFsense Server ---- > PC 5448 Switch --- > All other devices

    I am guessing this is what it need to look like

    PFsense Server --Trunk-- > PC 5448 Switch  --->  Vlan 1 All other devices

                                                                   \ --  > Vsphere Server Interface 1

                                                                                                               \ -Trunk--> Vswitch0 on Vlan 1 --  > All other Vm's

                                                                                                                \ -Trunk-  > Vswitch1 on Vlan 2---> VM Server 1 & 2

    vDS is only supported on paid versions (Enterprise Plus) and require a vCenter installation (vDS can be thought of as templated Virtual Switches that are replicated across all Hosts that the vDS is configured for).

    A features matrix is available here:-

    Also, that network setup should work fine just make sure you tag the vSwitch portgroups with the correct vLANs and you should be fine.

    Thanks! What do I need to do to get it trunking with my switch and vsphere?

    As long as the switchport (that the physical Host nic is connected to) is trunking the relevant vLANs, then all you need to do is create new portgroups on the standard vSwitch (presumably vSwitch0) and connect your VMs to that portgroup (see example below):-

    Clicking properties on the vSwitch allows you to add more portgroups.
