    Hi,

    I just downloaded ESXi to start testing but before I start I have some question about the configuration. Currently we have 3 systems (Web Server for an intranet Application, MS-SQL and Application Server) we would like to convert them to VM running on ESXi. My question is about the configuration of the server where the ESXi will be running should I run ESXi on its own Raid 1 or Raid 5 by itself( how big do I need this drives that host ESXi) and run the VM on different array or can I run it on the same array has where ESXi is running or external SAN.

    ESXi takes next to no space to install. You should use separate disks for install and your datastore. As to whether or not you choose to use RAID, that's up to you. If the thought of the downtime from having to reinstall and reconfigure ESXi after a drive failure bothers you then RAID 1 would be advised.

    Thanks Jason, that is cool so I can have a raid 1 or 5 and have the ESXi and the 3 VM running on the same raid and if I want to use a NAS to stored the database files.

    Many servers now ship with ESXi pre installed on a USB stick or SD card. No drives required. These solid state devices get very little writing.

    Didn't mention. Installing directly to a USB stick from the ESXi installer is an option.
