    Hi All,

I was reading the new features in network in ESXi 5.1 and found that there is a feature called Network vMotion. I am unable to understand it

A VM in vSS if vmotion'd between hosts >> then if I check the network history (under performance) >> I am able to see the network Stats for the VM.

If a VM is in vDS and if vmotion'd between hosts >> then if I check the network history (under performance) >> I am able to see the network Stats for the VM.

If the above is true then what is the difference (in terms of network stats during vmotion) in vSS and in vDS.

    Thanks in advance

    Vaibhav

When using vDS the network stats of VM is maintained.

    Hi,

Check this post. Same question was answered before, and you have a screenshot.

Hope that this helps in understanding statistics part of story. It is about more detailed network statistics, not only performance graph.

Also, if you have VSS it could happen that that port group with same name but on different host has different settings for vlan, security, traffic shaping, nic teaming etc. You will be able to vmotion VM, but without VDS it is hard to guarantee that all policies will be same.

So, with VDS policies and statistics are persistent in case of VM migration.
