  • 1.  Net app SAN LUN connection to a VM over the network

    Hi guys

I have a NetApp SAN LUN ready for a VM which is connected over to the network.

How should I present the network to the VM?

I have created another vNic and added this as a secondary network to the VM but is there a better way of doing this?

Should I be using the VMKernel Network and choose iScsi?

    Thanks, Maelito

    Hi Maelito,

Present the network to the VM as if it was any other network. No need to have a vmkernel, except if you want to create an iSCSI datastore.

Setup your network inside the VM with an IP in the same subnet as your storage. Try to ping your storage from the guest. Configure your iSCSI initiator and present your LUN to the VM in your NetApp.

Franck is right, with the second NIC added to the VM and assuming you have connectivity to the NetApp target, just treat the LUN like you would if the VM were a physical box.

You would only add a vmkernel connection if you wanted to connect the datastore the the ESX host and present it to the VM as a SCSI device.
