  • 1.  Name resolution crucial for cluster?

    Hi,

    for the smallest VC setup (2x ESXi, 1x VC) is name resolution crucial? (This setup will never be changed; VC is not AD integrated)

    Does VMware allow to setup a cluster based only on ip addresses? Or is name resolution a must have?

    What will happen if a change of one or even all ip address(es) is demanded? Is there a more or less easy way to go?

    In my experience, lack of DNS or name resolution doesn't go well with vCenter.

    If you have such a small set up, you could use the "hosts" file to enable resolution, since you say everything will be static. Even if you need to change IPs, it should be easy to modify the hosts file on the small group of hosts.

    Features like HA are very dependent on name resolution. As the other poster said if you don't have DNS and the setup is small you may consider going the host file route.

    Yes DNS is very important for HA and clustering.

    You don't have to have a domain to be provisioning DNS, you can do it with a simple linux box.
