I would like to install free version of VMWARE ESXI 4.1 on the below hardware configuration. I would like to know will it work. Also what will be the maximum size of a VM that i can carve out with respect to CPU's and memory.

    SUPERMICRO AS-2042G-6RF 2U Barebone Server

32 memory slots of 4 GB each.

4 opteron 6100 octa core processors

    Appreciate your help.

    Thanks,

    Srikanth.

Items other than your RAM and CPU will effect whether or not you can run ESXi or not. You'll have to check your other hardware specs such as NIC card in the HCL to confirm whether or not it will work (www.vmware.com/go/hcl).

You can assign as much RAM or CPU to a VM as you choose. With virtualization, you can technically "over-allocate" your resources as long as you manage them properly.

Use that link to check if the hardware is supported: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

BTW, the free version of ESXi supports only 6 cores per CPU. To support more you need an Advanced or Enterprise+ license.
