  • 1.  Migriting VM from one VCenter Cluster to another

    Hi List,

i have two Vcenter Cluster on different sites with two different EMC SAN boxes.

I want to relocate some VMs from one to the other site. To achieve this, i want to show some new luns from the san box at the secondary site to the Cluster on the primary site and do a svmotion. Then, so the idea, i'm disconnect these luns from the primary site and connect these luns to the secondary site and  reregister these VMs.

Both VCenter server and ESXi server are on the same patchlevel.

Is this way ok or may this fail?

    Kind regards

    Andreas

this will not work as you cannot do a vMotion or Storage vMotion across vCenter instances.  You may want to look at using VMware Converter.

If same vCenter and different cluster, but shared storage.  As long as the source can see the destination, Storage vMotion is a great solution.

Could you not add LUNS, SVMotion to the new LUN,  shutdown VM's and disconnect LUNS,  add LUNS to the second vCenter and Cluster, and finally register VM's with that instance of vCenter?

I may have misinterpreted the OPs post.  But, yes, your method would work, albeit a lot of work.  If going from one vCenter to another, I still think converter may be the "easier" solution.  If just going from one cluster to another, within the same vCenter instance and the source can see the destination, then yes, Storage vMotion will work just fine.

    Hi,

latency is not a problem. i have on both sites Clarrion CX4-20 boxes.

    many thanks

I've done similar stuff with one vCenter without any issues.   I don't think it's going to be a problem but per the norm you should have a backup of the VM's you will be moving.  That way if anything does happen you can revert.

    Hi

it will work without problems if you have enough bandwidth and low latency between sites. What storage do you have ?
