  • 1.  Migration of vCenter from VM to physical

    Hi

Apologies if I have posted in the wrong forums, feel free to move me :-)

We need to move our vCentre 4.1 (hosts running ESXi 4.1) from a VM to a physical host due to issues with our backups.  I have done this before and it went fine, but in the previous environment we have standard vSwitches.  The environment uses DvSwitches.

Are there any gotchas in my proposal?

    Build new physical server

(Whilst off the network) Assign existing IP and hostname of existing vCentre

    Power off existing VM

Power on new server, connect networking etc and add to domain

Run vCentre installer on physical server

When prompted, choose to use an existing database and choose not to overwrite

    Reboot

At this stage, pointing the vSphere client at vCentre would haveseen the environment as it was before but where are the configs for the DvSwitches held?  In the database?  if so, then they should be there and be happy?

Any info on this would be great - thanks in advance

    Thanks

    Kerms

    Hi Kerms,

Yes all vCetner Configurations including the DvSwitches details are stored in the backend database. the vSPhere client we install is just the binary of UI which will pull the details from Database and ESXi hosts.

So the steps in the plan you have is absolutely correct. good luck.
