  • 1.  Migrating Windows file server 2003 to 2012 by moving VMDK file

I'm not sure if this is completely ESXi related as it is also a Windows Server question.  I typically setup my Windows VM with two partitions on separate VMDK files: an OS disk and a data disk.  In this case I have a file server with a 400GB disk that contains all of the files/folders with NTFS rights.  I really don't want to move those files from my 2003 server to 2012 server because it would probably be a NTFS nightmare.  Can I simply disconnect the VMDK from 2003 and join it to my new 2012 server and have all of the NTFS rights follow it?  All of the users are domain based and not local to the server.

Actually it won't.. NTFS maintains permissions (using xcopy), however it's not necessary because:

    That will work fine.
