  • 1.  Migrating VMs to New Cluster

    Posted Jan 13, 2010 11:18 PM

    Hello Everyone,

We are planning to configure a new cluster with three new Dell R710 servers in it. This cluster will be seeing same storage as presented to two existing clusters (one with Dell 2950 and one with Dell 6850 servers). Once new cluster is configured and all required networking in place then we are plannign to vMotion VMs from two existing clusters with Dell 2950 servers and Dell 6850 servers to newly created cluster with R710 servers. As R710 server has all nehalam chips which is next generation to the ones in Dell 2950/6850 so will vmotion possible or do we need to power off VMs first to do such migration?

    Thanks.

We did the same exact thing about 2 months ago with no issues. As long as you don't put the R710 in the same cluster as an older Dell you'll be fine. If you mix the cluster you'll have to use EVC which is 'lowest common denominator'.

We are not adding R710 to same cluster and there is no plan to use EVC. Its a new cluster with R710 servers in it. So just to confirm that you were able to migrate Vms from cluster with Dell2950 or Dell 6850 servers to this new cluster with R710 servers without any downtime?

    Thanks.

Correct. I created a new cluster, added the hosts to it & vMotioned the VMs over.
