  • 1.  Migrating between different processor types in a HA cluster

    Hello Everyone,

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I've been talking to two different people versed in VMWare and get two different answers. So, any help here would be greatly appreciated. As it stands, we have a our main HA cluster of 3 IBM x3650 servers with dual quad core 1.86Ghz processors. Would it be possible to add another x3650 to this cluster even if it had a higher-end processor (say dual 3.2Ghz Quad-core), or would that cause issues with the vMotion process and mess up the HA capabilities? I've heard yes and no. I read somewhere that this is going to be a non-issue if you are going to be running the new six and eight core Intel processors in the same HA cluster, but will not work with prior generation processors.

I would assume that if I put the "new" server in a seperate cluster and Storage vMotioned it off the old cluster to the new one it would work fine.

    We are currently running VMWare vCenter 2.5 U3 & ESX 3.5 U3.

    Anyways, thanks in advance!

VMotion and HA are 2 separate things. HA has fewer requirements that VMotion since HA restarts vms from powered off state, unlike vmotion. As long the vms can be powered on on any host in the cluster HA will work fine.

So, theoretically, I should be able to add the additional host and both HA and VMotion work fine. Sounds as if the only way to truly know though is to test it out by adding the host, vMotion the VM, and make sure the VM powers on properly w/out errors. By doing that successfully with vMotion, then HA should work just fine. We, of course, would like the have the option to vMotion hosts if possible. Do I follow you correctly?

    Thanks eziskind!

Yes, exactly as you said - HA will work if VMotion works. But HA will work in most cases where VMotion does not work.

In your case I'm sure HA will work 100%.

Although the doc is specific to Dell Servers, it has a support matrix for VMotion compatibility between generations of Intel and AMD processors:[Compatibility Matrix for VI3 and Dell PowerEdge Systems|http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/eslvmwre/AdditionalDocs/VMotion_Matrix/48704A01.pdf]

As it shows, VMotion is supported between some chipset generations

Thanks Dellboy! That should also be helpful.

It can cause some problems with VMotion, but HA will definitely work without any issues.
