  • 1.  Migrate Virtual Machine from cluster to single host

    Posted Mar 02, 2018 10:09 AM

    Hi All,

I have 01 data center with: 01 cluster ( 02 hosts), 05 hosts belong the data center

The cluster with information as below:

    + 02 hosts belong cluster ( host 01 , host 02)

    + 01 vSphere Distributed Switch with 03 different vlan (1, 2, 3)

+ 01 virtual machine ( virtual machine A)  running on the host 01, network card belong vlan 1 on vSphere Distributed Switch of the cluser.

I migrate the virtual machine A from the cluster to the single host of the data center, the singe host do not have vSphere Distributed Switch, only has standard switch and attempt error as the picture

It's actually not an error, but a warning. You'll need to reconfigure the VM after migration, so that it is connected to a port group again.

In case you are already on vSphere 6.5, you may use the Web Client for the migration, which lets you select the destination port group in the wizard.

    Hi All,

I tried migrate the virtual machine but fault, and error as below

    you are using desktop client.

    is necessary vSphere Web Client.

    Hi PilotXP_11

I am using vSphere Web Client.

You cannot vMotion migrate a VM which is joined to a vDS-backed port group to a vSS. You will need to disconnect the NIC on the VM and then migrate. Reconfigure when it migrates to the destination host. This is not an error but works by design this way.

    Hi daphnissov

Your mean remove NIC or uncheck NIC on the VM, like below as picture. Can you show me how?

    Disconnect the NIC.

    Hi daphnissov

I tried, but the same error. I could not migrate vm.

Then join the VM's vNIC to a port group backed by a vSS, otherwise remove the NIC entirely.

    Agree with Chip Zoller.

Assuming you can afford downtime (network disruption on that VM), maybe this one is easier to follow.

Create a new vSwitch and portgroup on the source host that matches the vSwitch and portgroup on the destination host.

You don't need to attach the vSwitch to any vmnic/uplink.

Reconnect that VM to the new portgroup on the new vSwitch on source host and migrate to destination host.

You should be able to migrate now as the portgroup on source host matches the portgroup on destination host.

    Hi Bayu Wibowo

I did step by step as your recommend, and I moved virtual machine from host to another.

    Very helpful for me.
