  • 1.  Migrate an Windows SQL Cluster with RDMs from Old Data Center to New Data Center - VMWare

    Dear Community,

Appreciate your help on the below.

We need to migrate a windows sql 2-vm cluster AOAG (Always On Availability Groups) with RDMs in Physical Compatibility mode, from current VMWare Data Center to a new data center. We have stretched the cluster private network to the new data center. We can present the RDMs to the physical servers in new Data Center. Both Old and New Data Center physical servers have access to SAN. The new data center is built on VCF. What is the best approach to migrate this 2-vm cluster with minimum downtime?

    Prep :
If Shared datastores and RDMs are mapped/available in New VC
and Network communication channels are open to talk to other infrastructure components/ports Nodes, DNS, AD etc are tested between sites.
In case NSX-V to NSX-T , then need to move all the workloads in the identical segments same window during migration and cut over L2 bridge & gateway. (migrate or recreate DFW rules, server/service groups,NAT, LB pool etc etc)

    Steps :

Make a note of Disk details naa ids, LUN, compatibility mode,Virtual Device Node etc
Gracefully down the services and OS
Storage team will un-present the RDMs for ESXi host
    Detach RDMs
    Perform cross VC migration
    re-attach the RDMs

--> Assuming other things and focusing on 2 Nodes setup and minimum downtime during migration.

    Detach RDM
