  • 1.  Maximum virtual interface per physical nics

    Hello everyone,

I designing a new infrastructure with VMware VSphere 4.0 U1 and VMware View 4. I read on this documentation, on page 32, (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/view401_architecture_planning.pdf) that we only are able to have 32 VMs per physical NICs with VMware View 4. But our infrastructure will be based on the Cisco UCS Server, which provide only two 10GB physical port for each server.

I'd know if this limitation is with Standard Virtual Switch, or is applicable with Distributed Virutal Switch or Nexus 1000V Switch.

    Thank you for your help.

    Fabrice,

the 32 VM's are in the examlpe (Table 4-7. VMware View Node Example for an ESX Server).

Actually the limit on a standard vSwitch is 4088 ports. See VMware vSphere Configuration Maximums

There is no actually limits on number of virtual NICs per physical. It depends on throughput.

And also it depends on vSwitch configured port capacity.

    Hello,

Thank you for your answer. It means that if I use Nexus 1000V dVSwitch, on 8 ESX hosts in the Cluster, I will be able to have 160 VMs by hosts (not more because each ESX hosts by Cluster with HA enable cann't have more than 160) Right?

Without adressing the limitation of CPU servers.

    Thanks for your help

HA cluster can handle more than 160 VMs. Actually 100 VMs per host with 8 or less hosts per cluster and 40 per host with 9+ hosts cluster.

Now, with the ESX 4, Update 1, each ESX per cluster can handle up to 160 VMs. -> It's indicated in this document, page 7 http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_config_max.pdf

Virtual machines per host in HA cluster with 8 or fewer hosts for vSphere 4.0 Update 1 --- 160

Thank you for you help everybody.
