  • 1.  Linux servers P2V migration using Platespin application

    Posted May 10, 2011 04:57 AM

    Hi,

We are using VSphere 4.1 environment. We are using around 50 physical servers and now started P2V migrations. Almost all Windows servers completd P2V using Vmware convertor tool.

But the linux servers we are not able to do Vmware convertor tool. We have Platespin license is there. Pls let me know how to do migrate Linux servers.

There are two different components is there in platespin. We want to install Platespin Servers Migrate. After installing Servers migrate how to install Cleint in the Linux Physical server.

    Regards,

    Santh

you will need to install platespin migrate server on a windows 2003 32 bit server, then remote deploy the agent to the linux server. of course to manage all this you will need to install the platespin client on your pc or where normally where you have your vsphere client. have a look into novell download page, you might want to download the documentation as well.

    santh,

It is a relatively simple tool to use.

Once you have installed it on a server, you will need to access the console.

From the console, find the 'discover' option and run discoveries of both your Linux host and the ESX that you plan to migrate.

You will need to use root credentials for both of these hosts (and also have SSH enabled for the root account to make it work)

Once you have 'discovered' the source (linux host) and destination (ESX host), find the option to 'Move workload'

    This should start a wizard.

The wizard is pretty good - the only things to watch out for are that you will need to provide source and destination 'take' addresses. These are temp IPs on the subnets of the hosts that will be allocated to your Linux host during the migration process.

The migration is done by rebooting the server to an alternative, reduced OS that will manage the copy / move of the VM.

No client is required on the Linux host - just root SSH access and some downtime.

    Good luck

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply. The Linux source server we will discover and see the source server.

But how to select the target server for ESX host.

The ESX server also i need to discover, then select the target server. As of now target side nothing showing in the platespin migrate console.

    Awaiting for your reply.
