Can the ESX central license server be installed on a Windows 2008 32bit server?

Welcome to the VMware Community forums. Windows 2008 is not supported for VC at this time but here's a thread on what you would need to do - http://communities.vmware.com/thread/124886. Page 8 of this document covers the OSes supported for the VC install and thus the OSes that will be able to run the license service- http://www.vmware.com/pdf//vi3_35/esx_3/r35/vi3_35_25_compat_matrix.pdf.

That's for virtual center not the license server. The license server is an EXE and dies during the install with the same service start message but it rolls back the entire install.

The post by maxdm suggests a fix for the license server install. You can also download the license server install as a seperate component.

Guess I'm not seeing it...his link is for how to install the license server for ArcGIS license server. The license server download I did get directly from the site which comes down as an EXE.

The VMware license server uses FlexLM technology, so what works for other FlexLM license servers should also work with the VMware License server. The individual license server install for VMware can be found on this page (about half way down) - http://www.vmware.com/download/vi/drivers_tools.html. You would use that install instead of the ArcGIS package.

Her'e the challenge....the first step in the other article says to install the software and at reboot the service fails. With the VMware license server install it rolls back the install after the installation routine cannot start the services, so you don't get any options to modify or manually do anything afterwards - maybe someone has tried this install on 2008?

Can this be installed on 64 Bit 2008 with the new software releases as Im aware currently VCenter has to be installed on a 2003 server which isnt really good enough for our clients.

As per license server you can install it on windows 2008 x64 as well , I actually installed on a x64 server , regarding the Vcenter itself looking at the OS support matrix it looks like it's supported only by using the localized version of 2.5u4.

I'm downloading it and I'll try it today .

    best regards

Got it to work this morning - if you download the newest version of VC2.5 U4 - extract it - go into the VPX directory and run vmware-licenserver. It's a different build then the one you download from vmware website.

I had the same problem. I've solved this problem: download VIM2.5 Update 5, then extract and install license server. This perfectly works on Windows2008 32-bit.
