    Hi,

Is L2 multicast is required for vSAN traffic only ?

Correct. Multicast is required at the moment for vSAN communication between hosts participating in the vSAN cluster, for some infrequent metadata operations, but required for hosts to participate in the cluster.

    Hello vSohill,

It depends on what you are setting up (and how it needs to be done) whether you ONLY need L2 Multicast or require L3 Multicast. This may depend on existing factors in your network configuration and with the design of your vSAN infrastructure.

For example a routed stretched cluster set-up such as this would need L3 Multicast configured:

    https://storagehub.vmware.com/#!/vmware-vsan/vsan-stretched-cluster-configuration/stretched-cluster-topology-and-configuration

(or you could wait a short while until near-release of vSAN 6.6 when there is no Multicast requirement at all)
