  • 1.  Is there a correct Network Setup for ESX Hosts

    Posted Jun 16, 2009 02:31 PM

Have got a VC server and 2 ESX 3.5 hosts. Each host is populated with 6 Nics.

    Three VLans have been created:

    VM Network for Server traffic

    Vmotion: for Vmotion traffic

    Managment VLan: For Managment traffic

The nics from each host have been assigned as follows:

    2 Nics - VM Network

    2 Nics - Vmotion & Service Console

2 Nics - ??? what should i use these for? Service console?

    What am i doing wrong??

you set a ID when create a port group ?

to service console test setting native vlan in your core switch.

    samuk,

There is no right or wrong answer as far as deployment goes, most of the time it depends on your needs and availability of resources.

Ideally you want to isolate VM, vMotion and Service console traffic. So in your case you could setup NIC teaming as under

    1. 2 NICs - VM traffic

    2. 2 NICs - Service Console

    3. 2 NICs - vmkernel

    Mehul

    Guys thabnks for the response..

    Mehul,

Number 3 is the Vmkernel which is the Vmotion right? is the service console also required for this switch? Also i assume the 3 Vlans should be able to comunicate with one another?

    1. 2 NICs - VM traffic

    2. 2 NICs - Service Console

    3. 2 NICs - vmkernel (Vmotion)

Can the service console switch be put in the Managment Vlan? This is where all the Netowrk switches and ILO's for server currently reside?

yes, #3 is type vmkernel, required for vmotion. While VLANs can ultimately route, it is not necessary for them to communicate. and yes, SC is the management network
